Archaeological Institute of America

Our longest full-service client, the nonprofit Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) is North America’s oldest and largest organization devoted to supporting archaeology worldwide. The AIA has been with Castle Builder Design since 1997, when Castle Builder founder and lead designer Amélie Walker-Yung was webmaster of Archaeology, its popular print magazine. Today we develop and maintain all AIA websites.

Castle Builder Design took over management of Archaeological.org in 2006. In 2010, tasked with updating the website to bring it into the modern age yet still reflect the AIA’s 130-year-old history, we completely redesigned and rebuilt it, converting an old system to a modern CMS. This A-to-Z overhaul included the conversion of hundreds of pages of existing content. We also trained the staff on-site in Boston.

We consulted on the new website launched May 2019, managing crucial data migration, overseeing template creation and troubleshooting pre-launch issues.

In 2022, we migrated the AIA’s membership system—and its 9,000+ member records—from YourMembership to WooCommerce Memberships.

Castle Builder continues to work daily with AIA staff members to maintain the website and to develop new features.

Sarah Smith, AIA
“My organization has been working with Castle Builder for awhile, but we recently enlisted them for help with a big project. We were looking to switch away from our former membership website and instead merge to a new system that would be a part of our general website, which uses WordPress. We spoke with Amelie about this, and she was absolutely delightful to work with. She recommended WooCommerce Memberships and a variety of other plugins to help us to build the system that we were looking for. She created an action plan for what exactly this switch would entail and what responsibilities we would all need to take on to accomplish this and to meet our deadline. She responded to our emails quickly and concisely. When we ran into an issue where our payments weren't syncing with QuickBooks in the way we needed them to, for example, she quickly implemented a fix. The whole process was straightforward, and Castle Builder was transparent about every part.” – Sarah Smith, Membership & Societies Coordinator
